Brief on the Ministry

The Ministry for European Affairs and Equality was set up following the general election of 3rd June 2017.  This is the first time that these responsibilities were tied and assigned to one portfolio.

The Ministry is responsible for relations with the European Union in the wider sense and EU internal Coordination. It also directs the coordination of European planning, policy and priorities in Malta.  The Parliamentary Secretariat, falling under the Ministry’s wing, is focused on strengthening the efficiency and transparency in the way EU funds are used in Maltese projects and oversees the implementation of European programmes in the country.

The responsibilities of the Ministry also include dialogue with social partners and civil society, the promotion and implementation of civil liberties, equality, and anti-discrimination policies.  The safeguarding of minority rights, coordination of consultations, industrial and employment relations and occupational Health and Safety also fall within the responsibilities of the Ministry, together with the human rights and integration.

The Minister for European Affairs and Equality is Dr Edward Zammit Lewis, whilst the Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds and Social Dialogue is Dr Aaron Farrugia.  The Ministry is located at Auberge d’ Aragon in Valletta.
