ORIGINAL CONSULTATION

1.        Background

Through the Citizenship on Merit Initiative, Malta will be able to grant citizenship to individuals who have rendered an exceptional service to the country or to humanity or whose naturalisation is of exceptional interest to Malta. This will involve a Bill amending the Maltese Citizenship Act (Chapter 188 of the Laws of Malta) followed by a Legal Notice.

The Citizenship on Merit Initiative is intended to cover five sectors of particular interest to Malta, which are science, research, sport, art and culture. It looks at both past as well as future performance and provides the possibility of citizenship for both those individuals who have already granted exceptional services to Malta or to humanity as well as for those whose naturalisation is of exceptional interest to Malta and whose acquisition of Maltese citizenship would be expected to result in a substantial benefit for our country.
