Review of the 2015 Cemeteries Policy & Design Guidance – (Phase 1)

OPEN CONSULTATION

Mur għall-verżjoni Maltija
From: Ministry for Public Works and Planning
(Planning Authority)

Published: 22 July 2022
Running till: 31 August 2022
Last Updated: 22 July 2022
1.        Background

The Planning Authority has been requested by the Government to initiate a review of the Cemeteries Policy and Design Guidance (2015) regarding the development of crematoria. The proposed objectives which will guide the formulation of this review are:

(a)             To carry out a review of the provisions of the 2015 Cemeteries Policy related to alternative funerary techniques, particularly cremation, and seek to provide other suitable locations for the development of facilities for these techniques;

(b)             To set out design criteria for the development of facilities for these techniques.

Government is of the opinion that, following the enactment of the Cremation Act (Cap 599 of the Laws of Malta), the development of standalone crematoria, including the facilities (as specified in the Act), additional facilities for the internment of ashes and other supporting infrastructure, should be afforded favourable consideration.
