1.        Background

The EMFAF  2021 – 2027 Programme is co-funded by the European Union and seeks to
support investment in Malta’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Sectors, thus contributing to the horizontal policy objectives of the Union including resilience, green transition and digital transition. The programme is envisaged to invest in two (2) thematic priority areas with a total budget (EU+MT share) of some Eur 29 million (excluding Technical Assistance) as follows:
  • Priority 1: Fostering sustainable fisheries and the restoration and conservation of aquatic biological resources; and
  • Priority 2: Fostering sustainable aquaculture activities, and processing and marketing of fisheries and aquaculture products, thus contributing to food security in the Union.

Through these priorities, investments supported under EMFAF shall particularly aim to foster sustainable fisheries, especially small-scale coastal fisheries, and aquaculture, contribute to food security, restore and protect marine biodiversity whilst enabling the sustainable growth of the blue economy.
